The short version
- Cat Wu announced on November 5, 2026 that she is joining OpenAI to lead product management for Core Products.
- She credited OpenAI for proving scaling works, bringing AI to more than a billion people, and treating great products as core to the mission.
- The work she described is agents that support you and your team, leave control with you, and free time for people and work you love.
From Claude Code to Core Products
I’m joining OpenAI to lead product management for Core Products!
Cat Wu spent her last chapter as product lead for Claude Code, the kind of role that sits next to people who use AI while they write software. On November 5, 2026 she said the next chapter is inside OpenAI, where she will lead product management for Core Products.
No product page, download, or public build came with the news. So far this is a role announcement and a short preview of intent, not a launch you can try. She closed by asking people to keep sending feedback, and she framed the job as a stretch: lots to learn, and lots to build.
Why she says the move makes sense
I have a lot of respect for OpenAI for showing the world that scaling works, for bringing AI to over a billion people, and for believing great products are core to the mission.
Wu tied her respect for OpenAI to three claims, and in the jump from coding tools to core-product management those three claims are the whole case for the job. First, the company showed the world that scaling works. Second, it brought AI to more than a billion people. Third, it treats great products as core to the mission, not as a side effect of research.
She said she is excited to work with a colleague she named, an incredible product-management team, and people across OpenAI. For ordinary users, the interesting part is the product belief: if great products are the mission, Core Products is where that belief has to show up in things you actually use.
- Scaling
She pointed to OpenAI for showing that scaling works.
- Reach
She credited the company with bringing AI to more than a billion people.
- Products as the mission
She said OpenAI believes great products are core to the mission, which is the line that maps most directly onto a Core Products PM role.
Agents that have your back
Together, we’ll build agents that have your back and your team’s, and keep you in control, so you get more time for the people and work you love.
The thing she said they will build is specific. Agents should have your back and your team’s back. Control stays with you. The payoff she named is time: more of it for the people and the work you love.
That order matters to developers as much as to everyone else. Help first, then a hard condition that you remain in charge, then time returned. What Core Products will ship, how those agents differ from coding assistants, and how Wu’s Claude Code experience shows up in the roadmap are still open. The announcement sets the standard and leaves the product itself for later.
